What Is LED Tape Light?

LED tape light is a flexible circuit board, about 10 to 16 mm wide on the tapes here, lined with surface-mount LEDs such as SMD2835 or SMD5050 chips. An adhesive back lets it sit under cabinets, along coves, inside shelves or in an aluminum channel, and it bends around corners where rigid fixtures can't go.

Most tape runs on low voltage: 12V for short runs, 24V for longer ones, powered by a driver or transformer. AQL also carries 120V tape/rope hybrids that plug into line voltage and run up to 150 ft. You cut tape only at the marked cut points, then join pieces with tape light connectors.

How to Choose LED Tape Light

510 lm/ftMax output (Trulux spec-grade)
3.94"Cut interval on most Trulux tape
IP68Highest rating, pool use
150 ftLongest single 120V reel

Size the driver

Driver≥ 72 W 16.4 ft reel · 3.65 W/ft 3.65 W/ft × 16.4 ft ≈ 60 W + about 20% headroom → 72 W driver minimum Example: Trulux static white tape, TPL-AML-HTLHD

Voltage

Use 12V for runs under about 16 ft, 24V for longer runs, and 120V hybrid for long outdoor lines without a driver.

Color

Static white for task light, tunable white (2700K–6000K) for changing scenes, RGB or RGBW for color and holidays.

Brightness

Check lumens per foot: 255 lm/ft suits accent and coves, 385–510 lm/ft suits task and commercial lighting.

Power

Watts per foot × length, plus about 20% headroom, gives the driver size. Use separate feeds past the max run.

LED tape light is a flexible printed circuit strip lined with small LEDs and backed with adhesive. It mounts under cabinets, in coves or inside aluminum channels, and is cut at marked points to fit. Low-voltage tape runs on a 12V or 24V driver; 120V hybrid tape plugs straight into line voltage.

Both are low-voltage tapes powered by a driver. 24V tape carries the same wattage at half the current, so it handles longer runs with less voltage drop and brightness fade. 12V tape suits short runs such as cabinets and shelves. Match the driver voltage to the tape; never mix them.

Yes, if the IP rating fits the location. IP44 tape is for dry indoor spaces, IP54 handles dust and splashes, IP67 neon flex is sealed against water, and IP68 pool-rated strips can be submerged. AQL's 150 ft 120V hybrid kit is outdoor rated. Keep drivers and connections in a protected spot.

Most tape on this page is dimmable, including the 12V and 24V white tapes, tunable white, RGB and RGBW options. You need a dimmer or controller that matches the tape's voltage and color channels. Static white tape uses a single-channel dimmer; RGB and RGBW tape need a multi-channel controller.

Yes. Cut only on the marked cut lines, which repeat at a fixed interval along the strip. On AQL's Trulux tapes that interval is 3.94 inches (1.51 inches on the static white tape). Custom-cut 120V hybrid and NeonFlex products are sold to your length, so you order the run you need.

Clean and dry the surface, peel the backing, and press the tape in place. Join sections with tape light connectors or soldered leads, then connect to a driver or plug-in adapter of the right voltage. For a finished look and better heat transfer, mount the tape in an aluminum channel with a diffuser.

Add up the watts: multiply the tape's watts per foot by the run length, then pick a driver rated about 20 percent higher. Example: 16.4 ft of 3.65 W/ft tape draws about 60 W, so use a driver of at least 72 W. Check each product's maximum run length before splitting into separate feeds.

RGB tape mixes red, green and blue LEDs to make colors. RGBW adds a dedicated white diode for cleaner white light. Tunable white tape shifts between warm and cool white, for example 2700K to 6000K. RGBTW combines both, giving full color plus adjustable white from one strip.

Yes. RGB and RGBW tape can be set to red, green, warm white or any mix with a compatible controller, which suits mantels, shelves, windows and displays. For rooflines and outdoor outlines, choose an outdoor-rated product such as the 120V hybrid reel or IP67 NeonFlex, and keep the controller sheltered.

For kitchens, a dimmable 12V or 24V warm white tape gives even task light without glare. AQL's 8 inch plug-and-light kit and 32 ft under-cabinet kit make a quick install, while the 24V high output tape suits longer counters. Mount it near the front edge of the cabinet.

Yes. The Trulux spec-grade tapes are cULus listed, with outputs up to 510 lumens per foot and 90+ CRI on several models, making them suitable for retail displays, coves and hospitality.
